Dr. Shurberg received his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia. He earned his Medical Degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. He then completed his Internal Medicine residency at the University of Maryland Medical Center. His Gastroenterology fellowship was completed at Faulkner and Lemuel Shattuck Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. He has been named a Top Doctor in Washingtonian Magazine. He is the founding doctor of Gastroenterology Associates, PC and began the practice in 1976.
Richard D. Travers, M.D.

Richard D. Travers, M.D.
Dr. Travers graduated Cum Laude from Yale University with a B.A. in Psychology. After earning his Medical Degree at the Yale University School of Medicine and completing his internship in Internal Medicine at the Medical College of Virginia (now VCU), he served two years in the Public Health Service attaining the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He then returned to the Medical College of Virginia and completed his residency in Internal Medicine before moving to Washington DC for his fellowship in Gastroenterology at The George Washington University Medical Center. He is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. Special interests include acid peptic disease and irritable bowel syndrome.

Dr. Travers has served as Chairman of the Department of Medicine and as President of the Medical Staff of Prince William Hospital and has also served on the Board of Trustees of Prince William Health System. He has been named a Top Doctor in the Washingtonian Magazine. He currently works part time with our office and the remainder of the time serves as Vice President of Medical Affairs with Prince William Health System.

Dr. Price attended the University of Texas at El Paso and graduated with highest honors with a B.S. in Biology. He obtained his Medical Degree at The University of Texas Health Sciences Center in San Antonio. He then completed his Internal Medicine residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. His Gastroenterology fellowship was completed at William Beaumont Army Medical Center. He then served on the faculty at East Carolina University Medical School. He has been with Gastroenterology Associates since 1989. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. His particular interests include diseases of the pancreas and biliary systems and acid peptic diseases. In his spare time, he enjoys gardening, golf, and playing the piano.

Dr. Sherman graduated from Northwestern University with a B.A. in Classics. He obtained his Medical Degree at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. He completed his Internal Medicine residency and Gastroenterology fellowship at Barnes Hospital at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. While at Barnes Hospital, he was honored with The Knowlton Award and co-authored a chapter on Stress Ulcer Syndrome. He has been named as Top Doctor by Washingtonian Magazine and Northern Virginia Magazine. He is board certified in Gastroenterology. His particular interests include diseases of the pancreas and biliary systems and liver diseases including Hepatitis C. In his spare time, he rides horses and plays the electric bass in a band out of Warrenton.

Dr. Kim graduated from Penn State University with a B.S. in Science with High Distinction in 2 years. He earned his Medical Degree at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. He then completed his Internal Medicine residency at Medical College of Virginia and his Gastroenterology fellowship at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. He spent an additional year researching pancreatic cancer and then served as an Assistant Professor and Attending in the Gastroenterology department at the State University of New York at Buffalo for 5 years. During that time, Dr. Kim published a review article as well as pursued research interests in colorectal polyps and cancer. He has been practicing Gastroenterology and Hepatology for 12 years, seven with Gastroenterology Associates, PC. He has been board certified in Gastroenterology. Dr. Kim is married, recently enjoying the arrival of a baby girl and lives in Haymarket. He enjoys golf, mogul skiing and traveling.

Dr. Park received his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where he was enrolled in the Honor’s College, and earned a Bachelor’s degree in History. He later attended St. George’s University in Grenada, where he earned the Medical Doctorate degree. He then completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the Medical College of Pennsylvania and Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia, where he received an award for the best clinical educator by the medical students. He then completed his postgraduate fellowship training in Digestive and Liver diseases at Hahnemann University Hospital, with a broad training in Gastroenterology and Liver diseases, including liver transplantation medicine. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology, and is a member of several national gastroenterology societies. His academic interests include ulcers and gastrointestinal bleeding, acid reflux disorders, colon polyps and cancer, nutrition, and bile duct/liver diseases. In his spare time, Dr. Park likes to travel, distance run, and watch college football.

Dr. Banson grew up in western Massachusetts. She attended Brown University and graduated with honors with a B.S. in Applied Mathematics-Biology. She obtained her Medical Degree at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. She then completed her Internal Medicine residency and Gastroenterology fellowship at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia. While at Temple, she was honored with a Clinical Research Award and an Award for the Best Senior Medical Resident. She is board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. Her clinical interests include women’s issues in gastroenterology and chronic liver disease. She enjoys scrapbooking, bicycling, and Red Sox baseball.

Dr. Choi grew up in Alexandria, Virginia. He received his undergraduate degree from Cornell University. He earned his Medical Degree and completed his Internal Medicine residency and Gastroenterology fellowship at the Medical College of Virginia. After his training, he practiced in New Haven, Connecticut for four years, serving as the Director of the Esophageal Manometer Unit at Griffin Hospital, and Clinical Instructor at Yale University. For the next year, he served as an Attending at Metropolitan Hospital in New York City, and Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine for the New York Medical College. While at Metropolitan Hospital, he received an award for the Best Physician-Teacher. Dr. Choi is board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. His special interests include esophageal disorders, wireless capsule endoscopy, and the role of probiotics in digestive disease. He enjoys martial arts, skiing, and golf.

Dr. Baroni attended Monmouth University and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a B.S. in Biology. He obtained his Medical Degree at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences Medical School. He then completed his Internal Medicine residency at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu. His Gastroenterology fellowship was completed at Walter Reed Medical Center. He served several years as an active duty Army Physician achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. His assignments have included Chief of Gastroenterology at Tripler Army Medical Center, Teaching Attending at Walter Reed Medical Center, and a deployment to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He is board certified in Gastroenterology and has particular interests in inflammatory bowel disease, motility disorders, and interventional gastroenterology. In his spare time, he enjoys military history, gourmet cooking, Redskins football, and beach water sports.

Nina Phatak , M.D.

Nina Phatak , M.D.

Dr. Phatak grew up in Long Island, New York. She attended Columbia University and graduated Cum Laude with a B.A. in political science. She attended University of Rochester School of Medicine where she was elected Alpha Omega Alpha (National Medical Honor Society). Dr. Phatak completed her Internal Medicine residency and Gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, where she received full training in liver and digestive disorders including liver transplantation. She received the American College of Gastroenterology’s Fellow in Training award for her research. After her training, she practiced as a staff physician in the Veteran’s Administration hospital in Philadelphia as well as a clinical instructor at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Phatak is board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. Her clinical interests include colon polyps and cancer, gastroenterological bleeding, inflammatory bowel disease and women’s issues in gastroenterology. She enjoys cooking, gardening, and traveling.
